How age is counted for a job application
Age is counted in completed years, months and days on one date named in the circular — not the day you apply or sit the exam, unless the circular says so.
Step by step
- Take the date of birth on your SSC or equivalent certificate.
- Find the date the circular counts age on. It usually reads "the candidate's age must be between 18 and 32 years on [date]".
- Subtract your date of birth from that date: days first, then months, then years. If the days are short, borrow the days of the previous month; if the months are short, borrow 12 months from a year.
- You can apply if your age is at least the minimum and at most the maximum. 32 years 0 months 0 days is fine; 32 years 0 months 1 day is over.
Example: age limit 18–32 years
The circular says age is counted on 1 November 2026.
- Date of birth
- August 20, 1996
- Age counted on
- November 1, 2026
- Days borrowed from October
- 31 days
- Age on that day
- 30 years 2 months 12 days
- Turns 32 on
- August 20, 2028
Which date of birth counts?
For government jobs the proof of age is the date of birth on your SSC or equivalent certificate. Even if your national ID or birth registration shows a different date, the certificate's date is normally the one used, and an affidavit is not accepted as proof of age. So enter the certificate's date in the calculator.
What is the age limit for government jobs?
Under the 2024 ordinance (later passed into law by Parliament), the upper age limit for direct recruitment to government, autonomous and semi-autonomous bodies, and to all BCS cadres, is 32. Defence and law-enforcement recruitment follow their own rules, and private employers set their own limits. Enter the limit from the circular for the job you're applying to.

No. When a circular says "within 32 years" or "not more than 32 years", you can apply up to 32 years 0 months 0 days on the date age is counted. At 32 years and 1 day you are over the limit. This calculator follows that rule.

For government jobs the date of birth on the SSC or equivalent certificate is normally used as proof of age, and affidavits are not accepted. If the circular says otherwise, follow the circular.
In years without 29 February, the birthday is taken as 28 February. The calculator does the same.
